Duirinish Lodge is run on environmentally-friendly principles.
We have a strong commitment to limiting our impact on the environment as well as preserving and encouraging the local eco-system.
Heating and Hot water
The Lodge is heated using a highly efficient ÖkoFEN Pellematic Pellet Boiler.
But what does this mean for the environment?
Firstly, we protect natural resources, because pellets are a renewable “waste product” of the wood processing industry.
Secondly, we help to protect the climate, because pellet combustion is CO2-neutral.
In other words, you only emit the CO2 that was absorbed during growth. For example, a household burning 4000 litres of fuel oil a year releases 10,442 kg of CO2. An ÖkoFEN pellet boiler only releases 360 kg over the same period.
Electricity
All electricity used on site is produced by discreet solar panels.
But what does this mean for the environment?
What we are most interested in, in this case, is that solar power is green because it relies exclusively on the energy of the sun, which is not only free and always available, but also environmentally-friendly.
Tree Planting
In 2012, we planted 2000 trees within our woodland and garden.
But what does that mean for the environment?
Planting is a great way to help offset carbon emissions. Through photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and wood. By ensuring that trees planted are native broadleaf species helps to preserve the environment and biodiversity.
Organic Fruits and Vegetables
We have our own fruit & vegetable garden which is available for our guests to visit, explore and to pick fresh organic fruit and vegetables for the table.
Duirinish Lodge is a natural haven and we aim to ensure it remains this way. The gardens and woodland are tended with organic products (including seaweed fertiliser) and gardening methods. No pesticides are used on the estate in order to encourage wildlife, be it fauna or flora.
Seaweed has been used as a soil improver for centuries, particularly in coastal areas. Seaweed contains several useful plant nutrients, including nitrogen, potassium, phosphate and magnesium. Seaweed is a useful product for us as organic gardeners wishing to avoid synthetic fertilisers. Seaweed and seaweed fertilisers are also a sustainable, renewable resources.
Buy Local
We like to support local businesses and buy local were possible – reducing the need for long car journeys. Rowan Barn, Plockton, is a favourite of ours and sells free-range eggs, seasonal vegetable, homemade jams & chutneys made from fruit & vegetables grown on their Croft or locally sourced.
Recycling
Guests are encouraged to recycle as much as possible.
