A secret garden in which to while away the hours
When Lady Matheson took possession of her new home in the early 1930s, she created a garden in keeping with the natural environment. With an estate covering 18 acres, much of which is dedicated to ancient woodland, the gardens were designed with an eye to keeping existing plants and trees. Lady Matheson kept detailed records of any planting that happened during her time in the house, right up to the 1950s.
Influenced by the Gulf Stream and protected by its position high up above Plockton, Duirinish Lodge benefits from a more gentle, temperate climate than other rugged Highland locations. This creates the perfect environment for a wealth of beautiful flowers and plants to flourish in the grounds.
The rhododendrons are a particularly stunning feature of the gardens, some of them long established and imposing in size and bloom. Azaleas, gunneras, lilies of the valley, allii (Globemaster) and peonies are amongst some of the more prominent flowers and plants but the garden really needs to be explored to be fully appreciated.

Discover a variety of planting and landscaping, ponds and water features, whilst enjoying a stroll around the garden.
